Building Zipgenius 6.3.1...

We need your opinon, now.

We are building ZipGenius 6.3.1. It's a maintainance release but we would like to unclutter ZipGenius features a bit.

We would like to remove features that you consider useless and that you would like us to remove them.

We found that very few people is using the "SmartExtract" feature.

Probably, it has not been completely understood, because it has been designed to simplify life to average users, because it was able to extract document into My Documents, pictures into My Pictures, audio files into My Music, video files into My Video.

Unfortunately, average users are more average than we thought and SmartExtract resulted as a not well designed features for (or not compying to) ZipGenius design.

So SmartExtract will surely leave the ZipGenius program for goods in version 6.3.1.

There is another feature that will leave ZipGenius. It is the nested zip list.

Once it allowed to browse Zip files into Zip files (that's why we call them Nested Zip Files), but that feature has been designed when ZipGenius didn't have the tabbed UI and while it was not able to run a single instance of the program. In fact, if you run ZG 6.3.0 and open a zip file that contains a zip file and then you double click on the nested zip file, you will see that ZipGenius will extract that zip file to the temporary folder and it will create a new tab for that archive.

In few words: the old "Nested Zip" feature has been superseded by the technical evolution of the program.

Moreover, integration with mobile devices could be subject to changes. When we firstly added this feature to ZipGenius, it was the 2002 and mobile devices were PocketPC 2000 devices connected through ActiveSync. In 2010 things changed a bit... Windows Phones are among us and they connect to desktop PCs through the Windows Mobile Device Center of Windows Vista and 7, where they appear as an "extension" of the desktop system and you can interact with their filesystem as if they were removable drives. With this consideration into mind, the actual design of ZipGenius integration with mobile devices results "out of date". And useless because, in Vista and 7, you can handle compressed archives directly into mobile devices filesystems.

These three features are going to disappear from ZipGenius 6.3.1. If you think that other ZipGenius features should be removed or transformed into a different "thing", then post your ideas in the ZipGenius forum at http://www.wininizio.it

Hi All...

I agree with all three of the above changes and with simplifying to code and making it more robust.

Would removing the first step assistant provide significant simplification?

The slideshow function seems rather unrelated to zipping...with other tools to do that, perhaps it should be removed.

Thanks,

...Karl

Wheres this smart extract?

I usually use the extract button on the top and have mine set for expert mode(maybe thats why I don't see this) I usualy if I have to quick unzip use the right click file option to extract if I'm not in the ZG program.

I still like the sfx file backup option so I hope that doesn't leave . It makes extracting very nice for things like firefox that do not seem to have a nice way to restore if you reformat.

I'm just covering all tha bases just incase I've been using the smart extracter without knowing.

Edit:

I think I just found my answer
