We Did It! The Zipgenius 64 Bit Context Menu Is Alive!

Yes, we did it!!!

The 64 bit context menu for ZipGenius is alive and fully working, so we can enter pre-beta stage: now we will hunt down bugs and logical problems, in order to reproduce the behaviour of the 32-bit version of the same menu.

We almost ported the full code from Delphi (32 bit) to C++ (64 bit) but we lost the ability to "Setup" programs from archives (when a setup.exe is recognized).

That happened for two reasons: 1) we haven't tested a good and fast source code to read archives directory (nor zip or any other format); 2) having a shell extension that opens an archive and scans its directory to find a file is a really time consuming task that could lead to Windows Explorer crashes and other not tested problems. As a solutions, we are moving the "Setup" feature to the "Contents" mode of zg.exe (Right click -> Contents -> Setup).

Also, we will merge OpenOffice.org documents' related features, so ZipGenius setup package will have a DLL less.

The C++ code will be also compiled to produce a 32-bit context menu that will replace the current one, so you won't notice any difference when moving from 32 to 64 bit and vice versa.

The new context menu frces us to update the ZGExpress module (zg.exe): we have fixed some bug and polished its source code to run faster.

So what, now?

Here is the plan.

On Sunday March 14th, 2010, we will release ZipGenius 6.3.1.2500 - it will come with the updated zg.exe.

On next Saturday we will release the public beta release of the context menu and we will let you test it on your 64 bits systems.

Thank you for your patience and support (and also to your donations to our PayPal account) :)
